A Trend A-Making

Gillmor does a nice job of demonstrating similarities between Dean’s candidacy and A.S.’s run for California governor. Both are getting people who are disenchanted with politics involved in the process. They’re also driving their respective parties crazy.
Lots of Californians haven’t cared about politics in a long time. They’re now taking an interest. And, as Dean Murphy writes in the NYTimes, that could mean good things for the state’s Republicans. But, as Democrats say, Dean is too liberal and can’t win, Republicans think A.S. is too liberal and won’t win.
Now, it’s too soon to call this a trend — both political parties facing the same sorts of challenges within their ranks from outsiders who have demonstrated a palpable contempt for professional political people — but it bears watching. The times, they could really be a’changin’.
